There are so many reasons to choose bench seating: Benches are simple, restaurant-y, workshop-ish. Deleting the chair back frees vertical space contributing to your very modern minimal look. The low profile allows a bench to be stowed completely under the table. Setting your things on a chair seems messy_a bench can instantly become a side table guilt-free. Benches are less expensive than chairs. And you can't slouch on a bench. But benches are big, right?

Enter benchlet_a personal bench segment. Use one alone at a desk, in matched pairings in an entranceway, or in large groups around a dining table. Easy to configure, light enough to move around, heavy enough to sit securely where you put them. The front legs are joined to the rear legs with mortise and tenon side stretchers and pegged in place with threaded black oxide socket head cap screws. The top sets on tabs in the apron and is held in tension to the resulting chassis by an Xlarge wingnut on an equally massive black oxide thumbscrew that runs from the top reveal through an undercarriage springboard. Assembly and disassembly are easy allowing for flat-pack shipping and storage. An off-center cut-out slot in the top is multi-functional: convenient handle, point of visual interest, incoming bill filing...A protective water-based clear coat finish highlights the natural colors of the tulipwood and keeps the true white top white.

It seems the better we get at making and enjoying coffee, the further we get from the quintessentially American coffee table of our mid-century mothers' afternoon social gatherings. Formal, the coffee table was not a place to play. We would never have displayed our magazines at my mother's coffee table, much less eaten supper. It certainly didn't face the television. My mother still wouldn't know what a Latte is.
The tea tray, on the other hand, was the height of convenience, so much so we added fold out legs so we could eat straight off of them.
Much has changed.
The contemporary coffee table remains the heart of the furniture cluster, but with a myriad of purpose. Almost nothing is not allowed at the coffee table. It has become as convenient as the tray table.
And now the tea tray seems so formal. Even the name "tea tray" feels charming, antique. Tea trays are things you find in your grandmother's attic.
So just for fun, here's a mash-up: the tea tray married to the coffee table.

chair[dot]multi-ply

In essence, a chair is a bench with a backrest. Deceptively simple. Seated on a bench, your weight sends its' full force downwards. The successful bench needs to be only strong enough to support you. Add the backrest and the resulting second direction of force backward sends the whole design into engineering upheaval. To make matters more complex, most sitters' backs are far harsher critically than are their seats, so that backrest had better be in a good place when the lean meets it. And if all that weren't sufficient, bring aesthetics to the attempt to marry what is at the core of its' combination an odd unbalance. It's no wonder the chair is at the top of the list of designers' obsessions. Please accept and add my latest submission to the world of chairs: the backspring chair.

Two simple, squared-off one inch thick multi-ply planes are joined by a semi-circle of white powder-coated 5/8" thick rolled aluminum. At the rear, the backrest is attached to the aluminum arc by an Xlarge wing nut on threaded rod that rides in a vertical slot allowing for up-and-down adjustability. The other end of the arc meets the underside of the bench-style white-colored hardwood chassis with another slot and wing nut attachment that allows the arc to be rotated forwards and back, effectively changing the degree of the backrest angle. While the aluminum backspring is functionally hard and heavy, it does provide a slight feeling of spring and is set in the chassis strongly enough to support the continuing stress of that spring force. At the base, stacked multi-ply feet visually tie the top pieces to the ground. In all honesty, the resulting mass is surprising, too surprising for some. I believe its' weight is balanced by its' comfort and cool super-modern look. A protective water-based clear coat finish highlights the natural color of the multi-ply and keeps the true white chassis white.

table[dot]multi-ply

Studio, office, kitchen, dining room_a table is fundamentally a work surface. Whether the work is plain or fancy, clean or messy, a table is meant to be used. The top is simple, squared off, an inch thick in durable white colored multi-ply, a perfect frame, a support for the business that goes on above. The tulipwood legs are strong and straight with a gentle turn inward at the ankle and then, only then a flourish, a decoration_ankle socks and shoes of alternately set blocks of opposing end grain. More often than not, I design for disassembly. A table that won't go up the stairs is useless. This table is divided down the middle: dual leg assemblies are joined at a center yoke. The entire chassis is suspended from the top piece like a bridge, four parts in total. The joints are traditional_mortise and tenon throughout. The joint locks on the other hand are modern industrial. Extra large, black oxide hardware is extremely sexy. A protective water-based clear coat finish highlights the natural colors of the tulipwood and keeps the true white top white. I offer as a starting point this table in common materials elevated, never more simple, modern and minimal. Pure form speaking solo proudly. You won't die if your kids draw on it. Your stark white room will embrace it. Your budget is safe. Made to order, custom sizing is negotiable.
